3.3 star lighthearted comedy Appropriate for: all the people Appeal: 9 - Very few movies could be considered more pleasant than The Sandlot. Baseball, kids up to mischief and mayhem, a giant saint bernard and his balls; what’s not to love?! Production: 8 - The Sandlot is a tightly knit movie with an exceptional soundtrack mixing hallmark songs of the 60’s with a moving score by David Newman. The sets are designed with care (their small neighborhood baseball field looks like its been played on for years) and the wardrobe is spot on (That long billed baseball cap Smalls wears is downright adorable). Nobody broke the bank on this movie, but they didn’t have to. Storytelling: 8 - The themes of this movie are simple and straightforward, and its plot serves more as a medium for its characters, but where it shines is its authenticity. One can feel the love this movie has for its subjects, each one as if it was remembered not created. I have to admit, I almost always cry at the end of this movie, and I couldn’t even tell you why. Performance: 8 - Everybody knows, kid actors are not the best actors, but the kids in this movie nail it! Each one of these dudes brings a memorable and unique personality to their character. Plus, James Earl Jones. Enough said. Sentence Synopsis: They don't make em' like this anymore.
